2005 BMW Z4 Coupe Concept

According to BMW, the Z4 Coupe Concept represents the Z4’s “fixed roof” sibling. The new roof features a striking arch shape, sweeping over pillarless doors without an upper door frame. The roof’s backbone is provided by a stylish recessed rib. As with the 6-series coupe, the Z4 Coupe Concept features bulging rear fenders which are separate from the trunk lid.

Other traditional BMW styling clues can be found on the latest concept model, well as some more surprising, non-traditional elements. Similarly to most other BMW models, the Z4 Coupe Concept’s rear quarter window carries the Hofmeister kick. The precisely moulded panels feature convex, concave and creased lines, which enhance the glossy effect of the silver paint. Tonal contrast is provided by the charcoal-coloured 19 inch alloys, whilst the rear end boasts an integrated spoiler and twin, side-mounted exhausts. The combination of these styling subtleties creates the look of a traditional, classic sports car.

The fact that the Z4 Coupe Concept is a hatchback design places it in direct competition with the latest Jaguar XK, the twin-trunked Porsche Cayman S and the popular Audi TT and Nissan 350Z in terms of practicality. Whilst the soft-top Z4 offers limited storage capacity, the Coupe Concept can easily transport two sets of golf clubs. Further ingenuity comes in the form of custom-made wells in the trunk, offering unique storage for travel bags.

Enhanced performance

The Z4 Coupe Concept is powered by BMW’s R6 3.0 litre engine, which saw its debut in the 630 Ci, and currently powers the 330i and 530i. This critically acclaimed powerhouse is the lightest 6-cylinder engine in the world, producing an outstanding output to weight ratio of 1.60 bhp/kg. Performance is further enhanced by the engine’s ability to produce 232 lb/ft of torque and 265 bhp, representing an increase of 30 bhp on the standard Z4 3.0i.

The addition of an integrated roof has lead to the manufacturer’s claim of improved driving performance over the standard Z4. The roof adds extra torsional rigidity, allowing for a flex-free chassis. The result is improved cornering performance, enhanced ride and better crash protection. The Z4 Coupe also features BMW’s Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Electrical Power Steering (EPS) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), as well as an outstanding braking system.

Interior style

The interior should be familiar to drivers of the soft-top Z4, with the only new addition being the handcrafted theme which adds extra luxury to the cabin. Soft, naturally coloured Nubuck leather is used to accent the standard black leather of the Z4 Coupe’s bucket seats, whilst all stitching is carried out by hand, using 5 mm leather. The result is a cockpit which offers an attractive, comfortable driving experience.
